BorgWarner to supply 800 V SiC inverters to a major global OEM

BorgWarner says it will provide 800 V silicon carbide (SiC) inverters to “a major global OEM,” in addition to the 400 V inverters it already supplies to the company.

BorgWarner will supply two variants of the inverters: a 250 kW version will be used in passenger cars and all-wheel-drive crossovers, and a 350 kW module will be used in the OEM’s performance vehicles.

BorgWarner says its Viper-based silicon and SiC power modules provide 400 V and 800 V inverters with low mass, high efficiency, excellent scalability and high power densities. BorgWarner inverters are customizable from 150 to 350 kW.

BorgWarner says production of the new inverters will begin in 2025. Peak annual volume will be near 400,000 units.

“As a current 400-volt inverter supplier to the automaker, it was a significant win for our team to be brought on for the 800-volt program as well,” said Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager, BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems.
