Umicore begins manufacturing manganese-rich EV battery materials

Umicore plans to commercialize its manganese-rich HLM (high-lithium manganese) cathode active material (CAM) technology for EVs in 2026. This enhances Umicore’s portfolio of NMC (nickel, manganese, cobalt) battery materials for EVs and provides a design-to-cost battery technology.

Umicore says HLM outperforms lithium iron phosphate when it comes to total cost of ownership, driving range, safety, state-of-charge monitoring and recyclability. Umicore’s battery materials operations in Korea, Poland and Canada, which are currently producing NMC-based cathode active materials, will create HLM in the future.

“Umicore’s technology portfolio and projects—from present mid-to-high nickel, to near-term manganese-rich technologies and to future solid-state batteries—enable the e-mobility transformation,” said Ralph Kiessling, VP at Umicore.
