Skeleton and Martinrea to collaborate on fast-charging batteries in refuse collection vehicles

Energy storage device manufacturer Skeleton Technologies and Martinrea International’s Effenco subsidiary, a supplier of electrification technologies for heavy-duty vehicles, will collaborate to supply Skeleton’s SuperBattery technology and Effenco’s Hybrid Electric solution to refuse collection vehicles in major cities across Europe and North America, including New York and Paris.

Effenco’s Hybrid Electric solution electrifies the vehicle’s onboard equipment using ultracapacitor-based technology. It eliminates the need to run engines when trucks are stationary. It can be adapted to new heavy-duty vocational trucks, as well as existing fleets.

SuperBattery, based on Skeleton’s proprietary Curved Graphene raw material, can be charged in 90 seconds, has 50,000 life cycles and contains no cobalt, copper or nickel. It is also non-flammable and safer than Li-ion batteries, even when crushed, pierced or overheated, according to the company. It can help eliminate 40-50% of CO2 emissions in these sectors while lowering the total cost of ownership, Skeleton said.

“Our SuperBattery has been specifically designed and developed to enable the decarbonization of sectors and industries whose power, safety and efficiency needs cannot be served by other battery technologies,” said Taavi Madiberk, CEO and co-founder of Skeleton Technologies.
