Electric motorcycles are in high demand in Africa, thanks to their low running costs, but their high purchase prices relative to legacy ICE bikes make them unaffordable for many potential buyers (of course, this problem is by no means confined to developing countries).
Financial services provider Bboxx and electric motorcycle manufacturer Spiro aim to accelerate the continent’s clean mobility transition by addressing the affordability issue. Bboxx says its Pulse payment processing system can profitably extend financial services with a low entry point to previously underserved communities, while also providing a ready-made network for Spiro to reach new customers.
Bboxx offers services on a pay-as-you-go basis to households, businesses and communities, and has a network of shops and distribution centers throughout Rwanda. Flexible payment plans adapt to customers’ fluctuating incomes, allowing them to pay more when they can afford it, and less in lean times.
Spiro says it has sold some 9,000 of its electric motorbikes, which feature a battery swapping system.
The two companies have developed an onboarding process that includes technical testing, safety training and access to protective clothing, including helmets.
