Honda’s Ohio manufacturing facilities prepare for electrification

Honda’s largest engine plant, in Anna, Ohio, has produced its 30-millionth unit, a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine for the hybrid-electric system powering Honda Accord and CR-V hybrid vehicles.

As part of its electrification strategy, the company is investing $700 million to retool three of its Ohio facilities to create a Honda EV Hub in the state. Plans call for retooling the Anna plant for production of casings for battery modules for Ohio-made Honda and Acura EVs.

Since opening in 1985, the Anna facility has produced various motorcycle and automobile engines, transmissions, suspensions and wheels. Today, 60% of US sales of Accord and CR-V are hybrid-electric and use the Atkinson-cycle engine produced at the Anna plant. The company plans to introduce more hybrid-electric systems to core models and to bridge customers to Honda and Acura EVs that are in development and slated to begin production in Ohio in 2025.
