Solar-powered public EV fast charging station unveiled in Westchester County, New York

Sustainable Westchester, a renewable energy provider and advocacy group, recently unveiled a new EV fast charging station powered entirely by solar energy.

The Sunshine to EV project, located at Sustainable Westchester’s Mount Kisco, New York headquarters, includes an 85 kW solar photovoltaic array, a 180 kWh on-site storage battery, and twin Jule 75 kW DC fast chargers. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by a range of state and local elected officials.

The charging facility is located in a publicly accessible parking lot, within walking distance from a train station and a commercial hub featuring a variety of shops and restaurants.

The system was partially funded by a $250,000 grant through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and also supported by North American EV charger manufacturer Jule. Other communities in Westchester County have recently deployed EV charging infrastructure, including the City of Yonkers, which added 90 new stations in April 2023, and the Village of Tuckahoe, which installed 34 new stations.

“By coupling renewable energy with electric vehicle charging, we are showing a powerful model demonstrating the potential of bringing projects to life, which will make it possible to scale solutions that lower carbon emissions, reduce the use of fossil fuels, and create healthier places for us to live and work,” said NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris.
