SABIC offers new conductive resins for EV service flaps


Chemical company Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has launched its NORYL GTX LMX310 resin, which is well-suited to inline paintable automotive applications such as the larger, asymmetrically shaped service flaps that are common in hybrid and electric vehicles.

The NORYL GTX LMX310 resin uses an unfilled, conductive polyphenylene ether (PPE) blend technology that combines high heat resistance for inline painting with low moisture absorption for higher dimensional stability than incumbent polyamide (PA) resins. The high moisture sensitivity of PA6 and PA6.6 compounds can cause warpage. SABIC’s testing demonstrated that the new grade absorbs 85% less moisture at equilibrium than incumbent PA-based materials, reducing the risk of warpage by up to 90%.

The resin was developed under SABIC’s BLUEHERO electrification initiative, which focuses on accelerating the shift to efficient, high-performing and safe EVs. SABIC also offers resins for battery modules and housings.

Several automotive OEMs are working to validate the new resin for EV service flaps and other exteriors, such as door handles.

“The NORYL GTX LMX310 resin’s high heat resistance helps automakers ensure Class A color matching and reduce costs, as it eliminates the need for additional equipment and process otherwise needed for adequate offline painting,” says the company.
