Standard Lithium and Equinor finalize $225-million US DOE grant

SWA Lithium, a jointly owned US subsidiary of Standard Lithium and Norwegian energy firm Equinor, has closed a $225 million grant from the US Department of Energy’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains for construction of Phase 1 of the South West Arkansas (SWA) lithium project.

The commercial-scale Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) facility, located in Lafayette and Columbia Counties, Arkansas, is expected to produce 45,000 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate, developed in two 22,500-tonne phases.

The joint venture is 55% owned by Standard Lithium and 45% owned by Equinor.

A definitive feasibility study (DFS) and front-end engineering design (FEED) are currently underway. The companies aim to make a final investment decision (FID) by the end of 2025 and start Phase 1 production in 2028.

“SWA is one of the highest-grade lithium brine projects in North America, and through the use of DLE technology, a near-term, sustainable opportunity to help secure America’s domestic lithium supply chain,” said David Park, CEO and Director of Standard Lithium.
