ChargePoint’s next-gen Level 2 EV charging architecture increases charging speed, adds bidirectional capability

ChargePoint has announced what it calls “a generational leap in AC Level 2 charging technology.” The new product architecture will feature bidirectional charging and maximal charging speeds. Models sold across North America and Europe will be based on the new architecture, and the company will offer variants for commercial, residential and fleet applications.

“ChargePoint’s next generation of EV chargers will be revolutionary, not evolutionary,” said Hossein Kazemi, Chief Technical Officer, Hardware. “The architecture underpinning them enables highly anticipated technologies which will deliver a significantly better experience for station owners and the EV drivers who charge with them.”

Features of ChargePoint’s new AC Level 2 architecture include:

  • V2X capability;
  • Charging at the maximum speed possible—19.2 kW (80 A single-phase, North America) or 22 kW (32 A 3-phase, Europe);
  • Dynamic load balancing capability;
  • Smart home capability to integrate with solar charging, home batteries and smart energy management systems;
  • Series-wiring capability, enabling multiple chargers to share a circuit.

The architecture will comply with applicable regulations and programs, including MID and Eichrecht in Europe and ENERGY STAR in the US. The first models to be built on the platform are scheduled to arrive in Europe this summer, and in North America at the end of 2025.
