Bidirectional Energy and Wallbox launch bidirectional charging pilot

Bidirectional Energy sells software that enables EVs to serve as flexible energy resources. EVSE manufacturer Wallbox makes a bidirectional charger that enables V2X applications for the Kia EV9.

Now the companies have partnered to launch a bidirectional charging pilot that will be open to 180 homes in California and Connecticut.

Participating Kia EV9 owners will be able to use Wallbox’s Quasar 2 bidirectional charger and Bidirectional Energy’s virtual power plant (VPP) platform to save money on their utility bills while helping to support the electrical grid.

The companies aim to expand the program to additional vehicles and service areas at a later date.

The program provides participating customers with incentives for charger and installation costs: up to $8,800 in California and up to $10,800 in Connecticut. Participants can also save money on their energy bills and earn payments from their utilities for grid support services.

The Quasar 2, Wallbox’s next-generation 12.48 kW bidirectional charger, enables EV owners to power their homes or send energy back to the grid. Paired with Wallbox’s Power Recovery Unit, the Quasar 2 can also provide backup power in the event of an outage.

Homeowners in California or Connecticut who own or lease a Kia EV9 can sign up for the program on the Bidirectional Energy website. Once the charger is installed, drivers can use the Bidirectional Energy app to set charging and grid participation preferences, including mileage buffers to leave enough energy in the battery for daily driving needs.

“A key aim of Bidirectional Energy is to make it easy and desirable for drivers to unlock the full value of their EVs while supporting the grid,” said Frances Bell, CEO at Bidirectional Energy. “This program helps us bring this innovative technology to consumers in a way that is simple to enroll, valuable to use, and ready to scale.”

“Bidirectional charging holds the potential to transform how people use and manage energy at home,” said Douglas Alfaro, Chief Business Development Officer at Wallbox. “By partnering with Bidirectional Energy, we’re empowering EV owners to turn their vehicles into energy assets, earning money while supporting a more resilient grid.”
