Yokogawa Test & Measurement has released the WT1500, a four-channel power analyzer that measures up to 2,000 V DC directly, eliminating the need for the high-voltage dividers that test setups normally need to reach those levels. The instrument extends the company’s WT series into high-voltage testing for electrified vehicles, energy storage and renewable power conversion, and it fits in a 2U, 19-inch chassis built for rack-mounted and PC-controlled benches.
High-voltage systems in electrified vehicle and renewable applications can run into the thousands of volts, so test setups often add external dividers to scale the signal down before it reaches the analyzer. Those dividers can introduce measurement error and complicate the wiring. Yokogawa designed the WT1500 to read up to 2,000 V without them, covering power conversion systems (PCS) and energy storage systems (ESS) directly.
The analyzer has a total power accuracy of ±0.038% at DC and 50/60 Hz and a low-power-factor accuracy of ±0.07% of apparent power at 50/60 Hz, which Yokogawa says are the best DC figures in the WT series. It takes two types of input element. The High Voltage (HV) element measures up to 2,000 V DC and 300 kHz for PCS and ESS work, and the Wide Bandwidth (WB) element handles up to 1,000 V at 2 MHz for the high-frequency waveforms of modern EV motors. Both share a common sensor input and can be mixed in a single unit.
The WT1500 supports four power measurements and four motor evaluations, including both encoder and resolver signal inputs. The resolver support lets engineers run motor evaluation tests without extra equipment. Conventional motor efficiency measurements otherwise synchronize separately measured power and resolver signals on a PC. The analyzer also offers IEEE 1588 time synchronization, data output to CAN and CAN-FD buses and transmission over UDP, and it can be controlled remotely from a PC, external monitor or tablet.
For work that needs more than four channels, up to five WT1500 units can be synchronized for 20-channel power measurement, and one unit acts as the main controller. Yokogawa says multi-unit synchronization will be added in a later release.
Four current input terminals supply power to current sensors and work with a set of new current adapters offered as accessories: the CT Series solid-core adapter (60 A to 2,000 A, AC/DC), the CT1000S split-core adapter (1,000 A, AC/DC) and AC-only current clamp probes in 50 A and 200 A classes.
