Munich Electrification’s new ME SSR replaces mechanical contactors and pyrotechnic fuses in e-trucks


Munich Electrification has introduced the ME SSR, a solid-state battery disconnect unit that replaces the mechanical contactors and pyrotechnic fuses used in the high-voltage systems of electric trucks and buses. The unit is the central high-voltage switch between the battery and the vehicle, connecting the battery to the drivetrain in operation and disconnecting it when the vehicle is parked, during servicing or in the event of a fault.

The ME SSR switches high-voltage circuits within microseconds, without arcing and without mechanical wear. Its short-circuit protection is resettable: after a fault in the high-voltage system the unit stays operational, instead of forcing the vehicle out of service on a blown single-use fuse. Compared to melt fuses, the company describes the protection as software-defined, meaning the disconnect units are configurable, self-test to detect latent faults and produce data to predict failures before they occur.

Mechanical contactors wear under high duty cycles, pyrotechnic fuses are single-use components and millisecond-range response limits protection in high-voltage fault scenarios, according to Munich Electrification. The SSR has no moving parts, which makes it resistant to shock and vibration and lets it run silently. The company says it engineered the unit for the vibration and continuous loads of commercial vehicle operation.

The SSR comes in two variants. The standalone version drops into existing battery disconnect units (BDUs), which the company describes as an option for OEMs that want to change the switching element without redesigning the whole BDU. The second, called Munich Electrification Solid-State Relay Next, is an integrated module that combines switching and sensing in a single unit, which the company says suits new platforms and BDU consolidation projects. The announcement gives no production timeline for either version.

The SSR extends Munich Electrification’s product line from battery management and sensing into the power-carrying element of the disconnect point. It builds on the company’s BMS platform, which supports voltages up to 1,000 V and, according to Munich Electrification, is deployed in multiple OEM programs including heavy-duty trucks.

“The ME SSR switches purely electronically: wear-free, in under five microseconds, and resettable after every fault. This keeps the vehicle in operation instead of in the workshop,” said Timo Völkl, Munich Electrification’s CTO.
