Flexible packaging producer Constantia Flexibles has launched energon, a portfolio of European-made pouch cell laminates and cathode foils for lithium-ion batteries.
Constantia Flexibles says it validated its pouch cell laminate’s performance, including long-term resistance to electrolytes and stability through aging cycles, in testing with European research institutions. The company says it is the only supplier outside Asia offering commercially available, qualified and tested pouch cell laminates.
The company began its battery materials development program in 2021, reached prototype quality in 2024 and moved to industrial-scale production in 2025. The energon P laminate is produced at Constantia Patz and the energon C foil at Constantia Teich, both in Austria. The company’s existing manufacturing infrastructure can support battery and packaging applications.
Constantia Flexibles entered the battery materials market through automotive applications. Its first customers include several European e-mobility manufacturers, and it works with their R&D teams to tailor material performance to specific applications.
The energon P pouch cell laminate combines aluminum and polymer layers and is designed to protect the battery’s internal chemistry. Its structure is designed to provide the mechanical strength needed for deep drawing while maintaining stability and sealing performance. The laminate is resistant to moisture and electrolytes. It is designed for automated, high-volume production lines and is available in 155 µm and 185 µm thicknesses.

The energon C cathode foil is designed for coating with cathode active material and for consistent performance in serial production. It is available in widths up to 1,800 mm and thicknesses from 9.85 to 20 µm. The foil uses aluminum sourced and processed in Europe and is made with electricity generated from renewable sources. Customers can also request aluminum certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) or low-carbon European aluminum, which has a carbon footprint below 5 metric tons of CO₂e per ton of aluminum.
“The battery market is a natural extension of our expertise in advanced aluminum-based materials,” said Pierre-Henri Bruchon, Executive Vice President Pharma of Constantia Flexibles.
“Over the years, we have built extensive expertise in battery materials and completed demanding qualification processes with leading automotive customers,” said Wolfgang Kitzler, Executive Vice President Aluminum Division of Constantia Flexibles and Managing Director of Constantia Teich. “This know-how now forms the foundation of a portfolio that meets the highest quality expectations while strengthening Europe’s manufacturing base for battery materials.”
